Recent Fairmont Empress Review: "Our original room was on a side with a very poor view, overlooking an alley area and ventilation unit. Room size was satisfactory. After complaining about a noisy fan, the hotel did offer to change our room, which we did, and they upgraded us to a suite----not that much better than the standard room we were first shown (the suite had a small sofa in front of a tv and a little extra space). It was on their Gold Member's floor. Take note! Do not enter the Gold Member's Lounge unless you ARE a Gold Member. The staff was very rude when my friend walked in to get a cup of tea. Offending a guest over the cost of a teabag is questionable. When the magnifying mirror was missing in our bathroom, they sent up maintenance, and when we returned from shopping the mirror was in place. The front desk was always prompt to respond to needs or concerns. However, a second experience with a discourteous staff member was in their spa cosmetics area. She was not attentive nor helpful in explaining their expensive cosmetics line and seemed annoyed with our questions. However, the hair salon was very good, with Moon (a hairstylist), being very charming and accommodating. High Tea was very nice, and our waiter was gracious and attentive. The hotel location is fabulous and overall our experience was fine."

| A short guide to Victoria |
|
Victoria is western Canada’s oldest city and British Columbia’s capital. The city’s British influences are clear in the architecture and nomenclature; thriving Chinatown reveals some of the city’s other influences. The Parliament Building overlooks the busy Inner Harbour; the Royal British Columbia Museum is across the street. The University of Victoria is 7.5 km (4.5 mi) northeast of downtown.

|
Guests at the Empress work out in a fitness center equipped with three treadmills, two elliptical trainers, two exercise bikes, strength-training machine, and free weights. The gym overlooks a 60-foot atrium pool located next to a children's wading pool and a hot tub. Fitness center changing rooms have showers, toiletries, towels, lockers, and saunas.
Bicycle and watercraft rentals are available across the street at Victoria's scenic Inner Harbour. Hotel staff can provide guests with running maps, water bottles, and towels. Flightseeing tours and whale-watching excursions depart from docks in the harbor.
The hotel is two blocks from Beacon Hill Park, an expansive facility with walking and running trails, a petting zoo, tennis courts, and magnificent views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the distant mountains of the Olympic Peninsula.
